Blog's Reflection

When I remember the first day in class when Prof. Pittmann told us that we needed to do a blog for the class I thought that it would be an easy job for me to do, since I love anything computer related. This reaction lasted till the moment that I began writing my first post. I think that it took me several hours for me to think what I would write for everyone to read. The only thing that calms me a little was that everybody else was put to do the same thing, so that helped me not to feel lonely.  I remember that when I finished that first post, I rested like a baby. That same night when I reflected on everything I did that day, and I notice that I could cross out “Do the first post” I was extremely happy. Then as the next posts were assigned, I dominated it with less difficulty. Today, I made my last changes to this blog and this will be my last post on it, but I would let know everybody reading this if in the future I decide to make a new blog for you to follow me. Writing on this blog I believe that made me a better person because for example it made me feel less shy and be a simpler person. This was a very productive assignment for me. On this last post, I want to give special thanks to the professor but also to every person on my group, which commented on every single post I made. I know that you guys did it because you wanted to and not because you were assigned to do it. Hahaha

Competition and Cooperation in Puerto Rico

I am very amazed that an American came to Puerto Rico and choose to write about the cheating problem happening at Puerto Rico. I know that for a professor (specially Jim Cooper who is a “continental” one) that may be something shocking but for me this is not significant. Maybe it is because I am a student and I see this environment from another point of view from Jim Cooper. I have plenty of personal experiences on this topic but I promise that I am not the one cheating in all of them. The way in which Cooper introduces the problem sounds awful, if people who have never been here at Puerto Rico read this, they may think that we are opportunist and that everyone reaches their goal cheating. But it is not like that, for example, I have two friends that could be taking the Medical College Admission Test, and I know that if they have the key to it, they would not used it because of not trusting someone.

Competition and cooperation are two ways different approaching to life, but in this aspect both of them have their place and moment. I am the type of person who thinks that helping each other is not a bad thing, but the other person must be learning or at least interested on what he or she is cheating. In high school on a test about a Spanish novel which name I do not remember, I got the test of my friend, did it for her and handed it back to her. When I did that I didn’t think about all the things that could have gone wrong but some days later, when I was calm I realized that there are certain topics that do not help you for anything in life. For example, she read the novel a lot, and it did not help her at all. I know that she could learn more reading any other book, other than that because she reads a lot but mainly in English. So I knew that I wasn’t affecting her knowledge because she already has that custom of always been reading and she learned that she has to learn to dominate more Spanish books.

Another example was on a chemistry test, someone was cheating for almost three (3) entire pages. I just could not believe it, I kept staring at the person cheating for a long time. Maybe I could have used that time to think more about my test, but it was difficult because I had never seen something like that before. What is more unbelievable is that the person supervising the test, was a friend of the cheater and the supervisor was the one giving the answers. When I saw that, I was enraged, I almost ran through the hallway looking for the professor. Chemistry was not easy for me, and when I saw that it hurt me. The next day, when I saw the professor I told her everything, but I never knew what happened later. I only knew that I felt better.

With these two (2) examples, I want to emphasize that every person who is thinking about cheating, should reconsider because the material that is important must be learned. For example, if someone cheats on the MCAT exam, what kind of doctor do you think that person would be? There is time and place for everything. Maybe Cooper saw or heard about people cheating, looking at each other’s papers and thought it was helping, but I know that in very important tests such as the MCAT exam, you must know that competition exists and for this type of exams it must be an individual one. Plus it is obvious that everybody will have their exam answers covered. I mention this exam many times because soon I will be taking it and will not look at any other test no matter what. If someone ask me for help, I clearly will say no because this is another level. On this category, you are separating from been a regular college student to been a medicine student. This is why you must always be clear about when can you help someone and when you cannot.

My internal journey during the making of the blog and the journal

At first I thought that doing all of these assignments were going to be an easy task but when I started doing them I notice that it would be a challenge for me. During the making of the journal, I experience many journeys. At the beginning I was a little bit stressful and conscious when writing but later on, I just let it go. If I read my journal now, it is easy to notice the flow with which I wrote. I just kept writing till the alarm for the 10 minutes rang. Many times I was amazed at how fast the time went. I really appreciate this experience because along these journeys, I learned many things about me such as some of my passions, which are my beautiful girlfriend, sports and my future career. I realize that I love all these things I mentioned because most of the time when I was writing, I couldn’t get them out of my head. During the making of the blog, I got stressed a lot, but now I feel very proud of all the work I did. I like a lot how colorful this blog ended. For me writing it’s almost my passion but what makes it not be it yet is that it is very difficult for me to know what I am going to write about. For example on these posts, which my topic is imposed, I believe that it is easier for me to do the writing. Now, having almost ended up with this blog, I can reflect on this entire journey I experience and see how great it feels having a little public space on the Internet.

Many times when writing, I first navigate the internet to get inspire. For good quotes visit here and for great inspirational music please visit here.

A Letter to Cynthia

Hi Cynthia Pittmann, I want to thank you for all the changes that this class have done with me. This semester for me would be unforgettable because of all the classes I manage at the same time but specially because on this class I made my first blog and I wrote a journal. I will think seriously about making another blog for all the things that I want to share with my friend in the future. What I love the most of this class was everything that I discovered by doing the journey journal and some of the activities such as a day as a tourist. On my journal, I love everything I wrote since the beginning. At first I did many entries talking about the stuff I like to do but later on I learn to let my mind fly free and try to catch up my thoughts while writing. This technique helped me know more about myself. I also notice about many things that I like to do that before I didn’t knew such as watching some series that I mention such as Pawn Stars from History Channel. This journal also helped me express my anger when I was feeling sad and just by writing whatever I felt writing, at the end I always felt better or while writing I found a solution to whatever problem I was going through. A dynamic that we made a lot in class that I like was decorating our journey journals with pictures, because this help other people know you better and even help you describe the type of person that one is. I like the way that you used refer to us, always with respect and you were always there for us for any questions that we may have. I say this since I send to you approximately 7 or 8 emails that maybe made you feel tired from me but you never said anything to me. ha ha ha.  Once again thank you for everything, and I know that this class will help a lot in the future because of all the writing we did.

Daisy Miller's Discussion

When we read Daisy Miller at class, we were ask to answer some questions to analyze and get a better idea from this novella. First we need to know how to differentiate a tourist from a traveler. Later on, I will give my opinion about what is what and if Daisy Miller is a tourist or if she is a traveler. I will support my opinion with some quotes that I found interesting.

For me Daisy Miller is a tourist because a tourist visits a place and mainly visits the tourist attractions, therefore doesn’t get involve with the society. They see other places as an opportunity to be relaxed. We can also say that she is a little selfish because she does not care for example about Italy’s current problems. In contrast travelers are the opposite because they go to a new place and get informed of almost everything. They also try to experience everything by themselves. Therefore I believe that Daisy is a tourist because she doesn’t try to get along or get involved with European’s culture. Another detail about travelers is that they visit a place not because of any promotion or propaganda, but instead because they are willing to go.

A good quote for demonstrating this is when Winterbourne remembers, “I’ve heard that my pretty cousins in NY were tremendous flirts.” By this quote the author expresses that Winterbourne is seeing Daisy as a flirty young lady while she was only leaving the reality in one side and enjoying the trip as tourists do. Another quote that helps me explain the differences is when Winterbourne states “I had never, as yet had any relations with young ladies this category”. This other quote also helps us see the flirty side that Winterbourne is seeing from Daisy while she is just been a tourist. But also it let’s us know how amazed is Winterbourne at Daisy because of her being so different from other women that he have known before.

The difference for me is that a tourist, when they are visiting other places, they are escaping their real problems and world. Tourists basically visit some new places because of advertisements and/or references from other people. Most tourists just think about them and do not take in what the other community or society are based on while a traveler tries to integrate and experience the new community that they are visiting. A good example for both is the difference between the places that they both visit. While a tourist visit mostly tourist places which we could define as fake or prepared to create a relaxing environment, a traveler for example visit places such as urban places, and places visited by natives.

I also found some incidences about othering in this novella. We could see some othering in this novel such as the following. When Winterbourne talks to his aunt Mrs. Costello about Daisy and she says “they are very common, they are the sort of Americans that one does owns duty by not-accepting”. This shows how Mrs. Costello basically feels and shows herself as in a higher class than Daisy, and even a better person by just seen them once in the lobby. Mrs. Costello just stereotyped Daisy like if she were a common young flirty lady coming from New York, which Mrs. Costello has a very bad concept about them. Other othering moment in this novella is when Daisy describes Mr. Geovanelli as the best type of men because he is an Italian. She says, “He is an Italian… he is the handsomenest man in the world”. This makes remarkable how women see Italians because of all the movies that are made in which Europe or for example Italy is represented as a perfect place for living. This novella may be fictional but this happens a lot in our life. She obviously talks good about him because she wants to be with him. Another quote could be when Mrs. Costello describes Daisy, as “She is the sort of young lady who expects a man, sooner or later, to carry her off?” She here mentions and makes us see Americans as some people that depend on others and that try living off from other’s work. She criticizes very hard Americans but maybe it is because of the way in which she sees herself as a superior being. Possibly she wants Winterbourne to have a date with a European girl instead of an American one.

In this novella, the characters perception to the different situations that are encountered can be explained based on the characters nationality or the society to which they have been related. For example, during the whole novella Daisy is othered and misunderstood by the Europeans for her way of being because she has the habits and the culture of an American young girl. Daisy doesn’t bother to adapt her lifestyle to that of the Europeans and it is not important to her what the people around her thinks about that. For Daisy, going out in the night with men or to go somewhere during the day with a man alone is fine. In contrast, Mrs, Costello an European and “well cultivated” women, sees Daisy’s customs as audacious or improper for a young lady and she rejects her and describes her as a common and vulgar lady. This can be seen very clearly in the novella when Winterbourne is sustaining a conversation with Mrs. Costello and she says,  "They are very common… They are the sort of Americans that one does one's duty by not—not accepting". This quote declares by itself that Mrs. Costello’s thoughts toward Daisy are moderated by the cultural values she has from the European culture, which is a strict one especially towards women. On the other hand, by Winterbourne's reaction in that same conversation when he says, "Ah, you are cruel!... She's a very nice young girl", it can be interpreted that he understands the difference in the cultural values even that he sees Daisy as a “very uncultivated” young lady. This attitude can be attributed to the social environment that Winterbourne had in his life since he was born in the United States and then went to live in Europe. Finally, it can be seen in the novella that the culture and society influences directly in the way of thinking and perspective of things by the contrast that exist between Daisy’s, Winterbourne and Mrs. Costello’s characters and their social environment.

Reflection on my Journey Journal

On this post I will reflect on the journey journal I’ve been doing for the last 8 weeks. In this journal I have been imposed some rules to follow such as write your first thoughts, always keep your hand moving, don’t cross out, forget about grammar and punctuation, etc. Some of these rules have been a challenge to me but gracefully I’ve done it.

On my journey journal I notice about many changes I did since the beginning. The first main change was when I decided to write slanted or diagonally, I thought that it would be very difficult for me, since I’ve always tried to write on the lines. At the beginning I wrote curvy, like an arc, when you first see it, it would seem that the words are falling from the notebook, but if you compare that to how I ended it, you can see all the entire changes I did. I ended writing very precisely and diagonally as I tried to do in the first place. Another thing I notice was that I started crossing out every misspelled word and on the first ones I crossed out, I also put on my initials, as if it was my organic chemistry’s lab notebook. Since that moment I remember how seriously I took my lab. But them I learned to ignore all the misspelling and focus on the continuous writing.

At the beginning I first stop many times when writing because I have been always been the type of person that needs to think about the topic that I will write, so for me the stream of consciousness technique was very difficult. When writing, I always got distracted with all the things I got to do or the things that I wished to do, but I know that all of these distractions helped me out specially on my organization. I believe that it easily cost me my first 20 entries to get used to write my first thoughts. For me this activity was very difficult and at the beginning I wrote about the TV shows I see and the journeys that I went thinking about them and stuff like that, but later I got better. After all these first entries, my journal got a look like a little bit messy but it was when I fully reach the ability of writing every single thought that came to my mind. It really looks like I mess but maybe it is because my mind sometimes goes crazy thinking on many things at the same time. That’s why I found this very useful. This journal helped me understand the mess of thoughts I am usually dealing with.

The life compass activity was very innovative for me. I’ve never heard of something like this. I did 5 compasses in total since I focus mainly on the writing but I could say that I range all the possible number in almost all the regions. The region in which I was most stable was the spiritual. I consider myself with a good spiritual base because since very little I was raised in the church and I feel very connected to God and blessed by him in many aspects. Also, I feel very connected with nature, which is the main reason that today I used my bicycle as my method of transportation, because it does well to the environment plus I work out. Thanks to the life compass activity I realize that I may change a lot from day to day and that my main flaw is that I am resting very little. I know that it is because of all the stress I’ve been through but I am handling it well, or at least I am trying to.

Music I used to inspire.

I learn a lot of things from this internal journey that I made but mainly I learned a lot about myself. Through this journal I could visualize all the things I want to do. I could say that I define my bucket list through this activity. Every time that I was mad, I grab the journal and write, which made me calm and reflect on whatever made me angry. Doing this, made me clear my mind from all the anger and think on every goal that I want to reach in life. Some years ago I started a journal, but I can’t compare it to this one. I think that it is because I’ve change a lot. I am almost another person I could say, maybe it is that I am more mature now than I was before, but for me this journal was way more useful. Maybe in the future if I am having a tough day, I will use again this journal. Also, another thing that help me a lot define my bucket list from this activity was the part of choosing the pictures that will go on my cover page, which for example reminded me how much I want to travel to Bora Bora.

My Reaction to: A Day as a Tourist

IHOP Barceloneta

Today was a day that I was very happy to be Puerto Rican for several reasons. To get started, today I passed by many beaches, which I had never been. We took a family trip along the northwest coast to near Mayagüez stopping at various tourist destinations such as the Arecibo’s Lighthouse, the face of Indian, etc. I have been amazed with how precious our island of Puerto Rico is. Today I tried to act like a tourist and always look everywhere watching everything. Since the morning I imagine that my bedroom was a room in a hotel. I loved that I did nothing more than leave my room, that I listened to music that my mom had put on, so that made it quite easy for me to imagine that I was entering a lobby from a hotel. In all the trips I have done I'm always checking on the food, because I love to eat, and on this trip I did the same. I was observing the dishes of all the restaurants we went to and tasted many of them. When we returned from the trip through the island, I loved being able to have stopped at IHOP because it is a restaurant I always look for when we travel to Florida long before it was brought here to PR. I made this trip with my family to do this journey as a tourist because I thought that as a tourist, the sense that one more uses is the visual because you feel like an explorer in a new world. Something that I observed about tourists was that before they do something, they first let someone else do it so that when they do it, they don’t look so awkward, such as when they were going to order something in a restaurant that they are always watching other tables first. I found this journey very curious and loved how we spent the whole day. I think I learned a lot from it.

A Room with a View's Reaction

Lucy Honeychurch is the principal character on this movie, she traveled to Italy with her cousin Charlotte which both of them belong to the rich upper class. Lucy through the entire movie battles her old-fashion Victorian values versus her more liberal ones. This movie starts at Florence, Italy and it is based on a novel first publish in 1908. A reason of why the movie may have began at Florence, could be that this place is very rich and famous in art and culture. A mere observation of what principally made Lucy change her mind about her values was that she expected Italy to be like England, since in Italy you can see that social classes seem to mix. This could be the best example of the advantages from being a tourist. For Lucy, this whole trip help her open her eyes and see new things, as for example her experience with the Emersons, which help her notice that she can find beauty in the things that she found inappropriate. We can see that Lucy is a traveler person, and we can see this when for example she realized that she fell in love for George but at the same time she wants to stay single to travel to Greece with Miss Alans, an aged woman she met in Florence. All these tourist examples can’t be compared with the examples that Jamaica Kincaid mention at A Small Place, mainly because Kincaid describe tourist as ugly and here on the movie are describe as being amazed at things but in a real way and not for example wishing to live their rest of the life on that “paradise”.

Lalo's Recognition Activity

I received a message from the professor suggesting us to go to an activity in AJBR building on Wednesday. It was something about a celebration of a tremendous work made by a professor from the general studies department. I gave myself the homework to assist and to see by myself who was this Eduardo Lalo.

I was late to the activity because I was in class at the time that the activity started but still, I went to AJBR to find out what was happening around there. As I started to hear everyone else, I realized that Eduardo Lalo is a great writer who considers himself puertorrican even that he was born in Cuba because he had spent most of his life here in Puerto Rico. I also recognized that the award that he received is called the “RomuloGallegos award” and that is an amazing award for novels. It must have been an unforgettable experience when he received that award because he was competing with his novel Simone with 200 other novels from people of 17 different countries.

The activity was performed in the first floor of the AJBR building and organized by some professors from the general studies department. In the time that I stayed, one of his work mates of the humanities department discussed in an amusing one of his novels that is named “Los pies de San Juan”. While he was talking I couldn’t keep serious and laughed a little bit. I also noticed that Eduardo Lalo is a person that sounds judicious but that keeps sounding young at the same time and I admire that a lot from him.

I definitely enjoyed the time I passed there, even that it couldn’t be that much as I would like.

The Rum Diaries

My reaction to this movie may be a little different form everyone else because I didn’t like too much the movie, only a few scenes. I didn’t like the way that Puerto Rico is portrayed, specially on the scenes when Paul Kempt goes to a very “poor” part of Puerto Rico where you can see burning tires, little kids playing on the mud and another kid alone in an old abandoned car. I didn’t like this scene at all because there is a very big difference between been poor and been reckless. That “town” shown was a mess. I know that back then roofs where made out of zinc, and that very little buildings were made on cement but this place shown appears what it could have been a dumpster.

Another thing that I didn’t like was when Sanderson was talking to Paul about putting a tax in Puerto Rico. He was explaining that if you wanted to put a 5% tax, you just have to tell the people that you will need to put a 10% for some reason, then the people will start shouting and fighting but then you could say that because you want to treat them well and be a good person you could put a 5% and everybody will be happy. I hate how he says it as if we were just irrational humans, as if we didn’t notice every time the government does that to us, but our biggest problem is our society’s short-term memory.

By the breeze...

One of my favorite artist, Ellie Goulding.

My name is Antonio Raimundí and I live in Dorado. I am only child and have three dogs which two of them are named after two american singers that are Madonna and Beyoncé. My parents have been married for more than 25 years and they met very young. At Dorado Academy I studied since pre-kinder to 12th grade, in other words I had all my childhood at the same place, but I can’t regret it because there were many exciting experiences. My goals are to become an orthopedic surgeon and I think that this idea came after been treated twice after some incidents I had some years ago. The first incident was when I jump off a moving golf car driven by me and the second one was after I broke the ACL (a ligament near the knee) at a soccer game on school.

About my trips, maybe I can’t say much because the only places I have visited are Florida and some Caribbean islands that I went on a cruise. I have gone to Florida approximately 6 times or even more because I have some family members we like to visit, especially to keep in contact with them and see all the new cousins I have. Also, every time we go, we try to visit some attraction parks such as Busch Gardens, which is my favorite and Universal Studios. But I can say that my best and unforgettable journeys I have had, had been here at Puerto Rico visiting different cities with my family along. My family has a beach apartment at Luquillo and a boat at Fajardo and I could say that I have had the best moments of my live there along with my girlfriend.
